If you’re starting before dawn, you must be equipped with front and rear lights. Yes, really!

Also, please don’t overdo it! You’ll be exhilarated, facing this epic challenge, but pace yourself; it's nearly 15 miles to the summit with 3,300 feet of gain (never mind another 105 miles and 7,700 feet of climbing afterward). There are brief level sections at miles 6, 11, and 13 where your legs will get a break. There are a few switchbacks where grades get slightly steeper, but taking an outside line will help keep you in the saddle.

You won’t encounter any steep grades on this climb.

Road surface conditions are moderately good, with patches of gravel and potholes found among the early switchbacks. Pavement significantly improves after Squaw Pass, approximately 8.5 miles into the climb.
